A Message from the Attorney
Thank you for visiting my site.
I am Takuya Sugimoto, Attorney at Law.
I was admitted to the Japanese bar in December 2013. Since then, I have gained experience not only at a private law firm but also as in-house counsel at a government-affiliated financial institution and a foreign life insurance company. I am currently based at a corporate law firm in Toshima, Tokyo, where I focus on providing ongoing legal support to businesses.
Following my admission to the bar, I worked at a Tokyo law firm handling a wide range of matters for individuals and small-to-medium enterprises. Seeking to deepen my professional expertise and gain an inside perspective on corporate operations, I then joined the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) as in-house counsel for approximately two and a half years, followed by a position as Legal Manager at MetLife Insurance Co., Ltd. for approximately one year and eight months.
Through those roles, I acquired broad practical experience in corporate legal work — including drafting and reviewing cross-border loan and investment agreements in both English and Japanese, regulatory compliance under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, the Insurance Business Act, and other financial regulations, building internal compliance frameworks, and conducting in-house training programs. Drawing on this foundation, I currently advise clients on a wide range of matters including contract review, regulatory compliance, English-language contracts, internal governance, and other legal issues arising from corporate operations.
I currently serve as retained counsel for more than 30 companies on an ongoing basis. My clients span a wide range of industries and sizes, including insurance agencies, IT companies, and systems developers. Providing continuous support on day-to-day legal consultations, contract matters, employment issues, negotiations with counterparties, internal policy development, and legal analysis for new business initiatives has been one of the defining strengths of my practice.
The ability to give advice that accounts for each company's decision-making processes, internal dynamics, and business characteristics — aspects that are difficult to grasp through one-off matters — is something I believe is only possible through ongoing retainer relationships. I place priority on whether advice can realistically be implemented in practice, whether it supports business advancement, and whether it is sound as a management decision — not simply citing general legal principles. My aim is to deliver legal services that are both practical and grounded in commercial reality.
In addition, I have been registered as a Small & Medium Enterprise Consultant (中小企業診断士) since 2020, which allows me to respond to consultations on management issues and government subsidies beyond pure legal matters. I place great importance on supporting the growth and sustainable development of businesses from both a legal and business management perspective.
In corporate management, legal accuracy is of course essential — but equally important is practical, business-oriented judgment suited to the realities of each operation. I am committed not merely to identifying legal risks, but to thinking through solutions together with my clients and proposing courses of action that move their businesses forward.
I hope to be a trusted, accessible legal partner for your business.
I look forward to working with you.
